Islamic woman had to undress on the beach in Nice
The woman, dressed in leggings and a long turquoise top, had to take off the latter. The officials wanted to enforce the burkini ban — and caused a great stir.
Photos of a police checkpoint on the beach in Nice have fueled the debate over burkini bans in France. In the social networks, photos initially published in the British media, in which a woman takes off her long top in front of four police officers, caused a storm of indignation on Wednesday. Newspapers picked up on the issue and commented on Thursday (International press reviews on burkini bans)
The pictures show how four members of the city police surround a woman who is lying on the beach in the southern French city in leggings, a long turquoise top and a scarf wrapped around her head — she is not wearing a burkini. Then the woman takes off the turquoise top, under which she is still wearing a sleeveless top.
Outraged reactions
It is unclear what exactly the police asked of the woman. Nevertheless, there were immediate indignant reactions on Twitter: “They want to take her clothes away,” wrote the chairman of the collective against Islamophobia in France, Marwan Muhammad.
