Importance of Fashion: Importance of Dress and Know How to Dress
We can define fashion as a cultural and social phenomenon that has to do with the establishment of different parameters of clothing that are popularized and that become common to an era, clearly marking it in opposition to others. Fashion means that certain clothes, outfits and clothing or clothing styles become popular and are accepted by the majority of the population as the characteristic elements of an era. Many times fashion is related to the historical, social, economic, political or cultural context in which it arises, so it can be said that its importance lies in the fact that fashion represents in one way or another a way of expressing a society determined in a specific space and time.
When we talk about fashion we are referring to a phenomenon that is mainly linked with aesthetic and beauty values rather than with elements of functionality. That is to say that many times the garments that are established as fashion are not always the most comfortable or useful if they arise as fashion by providing aesthetic, beauty, new and unique style elements.
Fashion is part of the culture and therefore is part of the creations of the human being, so it is important as any other cultural creation is. Thus, it represents a way of feeling, thinking or choosing of the human being of an era that defines it in a particular way and opposes it to the human being of earlier or future times. Fashion, in the same way that art, music, philosophy can do, are all cultural elements and mark the identity and personality or the characteristic elements of a society. In the particular case of fashion we must also add the idea that it is always very visible and easily recognizable by changing much faster than other cultural expressions, always doing so around a defined space and time.
Importance of Dress and Know How to Dress:
Understood as one of the most useful creations of the human being since almost the beginning of its existence — and sometimes controversial -, clothing is of unique importance in the quality of life of any person or individual. It is a description and presentation of who we are before others. It transmits traditions, tastes, preferences, as well as allows to express social or political positions. On the other hand, it generates conflicting scenarios, mainly in terms of equality between men and women, in the sense, for example, of forming stereotypes, and also in a religious aspect, given the intolerance and discrimination.
Functions of clothing: cover and protect the body from inhospitable weather, mark status and social belonging or simply convey fashion
Not only does it allow the body to be covered so that the cold of winter does not affect it, but also on the aesthetic level it will give the person pleasure, especially if it is someone who is a fan of fashion and good physical resemblance.
It is one of the elements that differentiates the human being from the rest of the animals and is characterized by providing numerous benefits, as we anticipated.
When talking about clothing, it must be said that its value revolves especially around its utilitarian function, that is, that which has to do with the protection and shelter of the body.
The human being from the beginning of his existence needed to have some kind of garment that allowed him to defend his body from the inhospitable and harsh climate, as well as possible diseases.
While the dress of the first men was primitive and very simple, made based on the animal elements available, the man of antiquity managed to develop excellent clothing that many would envy today.
The main function and usefulness that human beings gave to clothing was to cover the body and protect it from the inclement weather, especially when life developed mostly outside, while slowly and slowly, the evolution that occurred at all levels of life was giving rise to other functions that were appearing as societies and human villages became complex.
Thus, clothing or garments that previously only served to cover us, progressively, became elements of social differentiation and belonging to a certain community, that is, dressing certain garments is a symbol of social status or it can also be the indicator that such person belongs to a certain culture or ethnicity.
Thus, wearing a couture dress at a party allows us to deduce that the wearer has the financial resources to access a garment that is expensive.
Here the importance of clothing will then be linked to the creation of identity, for example, as with the traditional and traditional costumes of communities used in festivities, but also and especially with the socio-economic, labor and religious differences that could be marked with clothing.
From the very early forms of social organization, clothing was important to mark wealth or poverty, as well as trade or labor, religion, marital status, even age and gender.
Finally, one of the last functions that developed the dress was that which has to do with the aesthetic and this is so when the concept of fashion appears.
According to this idea, clothing is no longer as important as social protection or differentiation but as a kind of work of art in itself in which designers and artists come together to shape it, and there is a consumer audience eager to acquire it because it it places them within the group that you wear according to the fashion and trends that are used, a fact that reports positive recognition and appreciation in some contexts.
Clothing understood as fashion is nowadays part of a large global business that moves millions and represents an important mobilization of brands, designs, clothing houses, events, etc.
Choosing the appropriate clothing for our physique and for the activity or context in which we participate is knowing how to dress
Of course, the fashion business imposes mostly what we all wear, it is difficult to escape the mandate that the big brands and designers bring us each season, but now we must clarify that following fashion does not imply knowing how to dress, or that what we let’s say it feels good in any way.
Knowing how to dress will imply the provision of a high degree of self-knowledge and personal common sense, that is, knowing that we are fit and not, which is more or less comfortable to use depending on the occasion or activity that is carried out.
If we have to attend an activity in the field, we cannot go with a party dress, or if we have a commitment linked to religion, we cannot attend with a provocative outfit, because in both circumstances we will keep up with the “protocol” of clothing that is usually recommend in those cases, something comfortable and simple, and serious and demure, respectively.
So, at the time of dressing we must not only pay attention and consider that the garments fit with the existing climate where we live and the activities that we develop, but it is also essential to know that it suits us and favors us; fashion is captivating and knows how to mark the qualitative leap, however, if we do not attend to the rest of the factors mentioned clearly we would not be knowing how to dress …
